You are your child’s first and most important teacher.

It’s a well-documented fact – when parents are involved in their children’s education, children do better in school.  The family makes critical contributions to student achievement from preschool through high school.  Here in the Spotswood schools, the high quality of our district is in large part due to you, the families in the communities we serve.  Whether creating a home environment that supports learning or getting involved in our schools, we welcome and encourage your commitment to the education of your child.

Parental Involvement at Home

The research overwhelmingly demonstrates that a home focused on learning and education is positively related to student achievement.  When parents are involved in their children’s education at home, they do better in school.  What are some ways to foster this environment?
  • Read to your child
  • Check homework every night
  • Limit TV viewing or electronic games, especially on school days
  • Help them develop and maintain organizational skills
  • Discuss what your child learned in school - every day

The most important thing you can do is to make education a priority.  If you make it clear how important learning is to you, it will become important to your child.

Parental Involvement at School

There are many ways to get involved in our schools, including:

  • Discussing your child's progress with teachers
  • Attending school functions
  • Becoming a room parent (grades pre-K through 5)
  • Joining the PTA
  • Volunteering for parent groups in the high school, such as Project Graduation
  • Attending Board of Education meetings (first and third Tuesdays of each month, 7:00 p.m., High School Media Center)
Parents are encouraged to contact their child's teachers and school office for more information and opportunities.
